Coronavirus update for the UW-Superior campus community

The following message from Lindsey Dahlberg, UW-Superior environmental health & safety director, shares important information to the campus commnity regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19). UW-Superior is actively monitoring this situation and will notify the campus community if there are any significant developments.

We believe that the risk to the campus community is low for these important reasons:

  • There are no suspected or reported cases of Coronavirus on campus or in the Duluth/Superior area. The closest confirmed case to us is in Madison, Wisconsin, where that person immediately sought treatment at University Hospital and is now self-isolated at home.
  • UW-Superior does not have any students who are from Wuhan, China or the Hubei province of China, where the Coronavirus was first identified. In addition, we are not aware of any employees or students who have traveled to Hubei Province since the outbreak began.
  • We are not aware of any UW-Superior employees or students who have been exposed to Coronavirus.

The UW-Superior Emergency Response Team and UW System are actively monitoring this situation. I will notify you if there are any significant developments.

Continue to practice preventative wellness efforts to avoid this and other viruses, including:

  • Cough and sneeze into your elbow rather than into your hands
  • Wash your hands regularly or use hand sanitizer
  • Contact your primary health provider if you are experiencing Influenza-like symptoms
  • Stay home if you’re sick
  • Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization for more information about Coronavirus
  • Remember: if someone feels ill, it does not automatically mean that they have contracted Coronavirus

I would like to take this opportunity to express empathy for members of our UW-Superior community who may have connections with any of the locations where the virus is now surfacing. It’s important that we recognize as a campus community that this is a stressful time for some of our fellow Yellowjackets and that we should demonstrate compassion and support.
