A recently retired UW-Superior faculty member has been recognized by her alma mater. Dr. Beth Gilbert has been named to the University of Northern Iowa School of Music Hall of Fame. The award is in honor of excellence as a professional musician, arts advocate, mentor and life-long educator.

“I got a letter from the director of the School of Music last April,” said Dr. Gilbert. “I thought ‘it can’t be,’ because I know some of the people that are already in it and they were my professors when I was there. I started to cry. I just couldn’t believe it. I’m very honored.”

A native of northwest Iowa, Dr. Gilbert attended the University of Northern Iowa to pursue her passion for teaching, earning degrees in piano performance and choral music education.

“It’s very special,” said Dr. Gilbert. “I think for a lot of us, your undergraduate school is really where you become an adult. The undergraduate is really special. To receive that honor from my undergraduate institution was one of the most special things that has ever happened to me.”

She then continued her studies at the University of Michigan and the University of Arizona. She joined UW-Superior faculty in 1983, teaching piano, piano repertoire, piano pedagogy and advanced theory. She chaired the Music Department from 2006 until 2017.

Dr. Gilbert has performed solo and chamber music recitals in more than a dozen states and Canada, and has been a featured clinician at the MTNA National Convention as well as the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. She has been a featured soloist with the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra three times and has been Principal Keyboard of the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra for the past 30 years, in addition to serving as rehearsal pianist for the Symphony Chorus. Her piano students have won numerous awards and competitions including MTNA state-level competitions in the high school and collegiate divisions, WMTA State Badger Keyboard, Lake Superior Ragtime Society competition, DSSO Young Artist competition and the UW-Superior Concerto competitions. Dr. Gilbert was also on the staff of the world-famous Interlochen Arts Camp in Interlochen, Mich., for 35 summers.

She has received the UW-Superior Chancellor’s Award for Exemplary Advising, the UW-Superior Chancellor’s Award for Model Teaching, an Honorary Alumnus Award from the UW-Superior Alumni Association, the James Rainaldo Mentor Award in appreciation of outstanding student mentoring at UW-Superior and an Alumni Award for Excellence in Performance and Teaching from the University of Arizona.

After 34 years of teaching at UW-Superior, she retired this past June.

“I’m really grateful to UW-Superior for all the years that I was here on faculty and all the opportunities I had here for growth and performance,” said Dr. Gilbert.
