Holmes wins Outstanding Witness Award at Mock Trial Invitational

Holmes competed against an Upper Midwest field and prevailed as one of the outstanding witness performers

University of Wisconsin-Superior student Scott Holmes earned an Outstanding Witness award at the Ole Open hosted by St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., during the November 16-18 tournament. Holmes competed against an Upper Midwest field of mock trial teams and prevailed as one of the outstanding witness performers for his portrayal of plaintiff Alex Grace, the executive producer and star talk show host.

UW-Superior’s team lost three heartbreaking one-three point rounds to finish the invitational with a 2-6 record.

The following mock trial team members earned Outstanding Attorney nominations in rounds of competition: Kenneth Benz, Bella Gigliotti, Autumn Bass, Julian Williams, and Jeb Leone and Alex DeBlaey was recognized for his work on the tournament bye team. Mock trial team Holmes, Williams, Bass, Leone and Desiray Matthews earned Outstanding Witness nominations in rounds of competition.

The team was coached by Maria Stalzer Wyant Cuzzo, head academic coach. Douglas County District Attorney Mark Fruehauf traveled with Cuzzo to judge rounds of competition. Other coaches that helped prepare the team for competition included Cassy and Eric Burr.

The team competes next at the Superior Durst Mock Trial Invitational hosted at UW-Superior November 30-Decemebr 2. This invitational is free and open to the public. There are four rounds of competition: one round begins 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 30; two rounds occur on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 9:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.; and the final round of competition occurs Sunday, Dec. 2, at 9:15 a.m. Spectators can watch UW-Superior’s team compete in any of these rounds. The awards ceremony will be held on Sunday around 1 p.m. in the Erlenbach Lecture Hall. Over 150 Mockers from around the Midwest (and their coaches) will attend the invitational.  For more details, contact Maria Cuzzo.
