UW-Superior will hold a celebration for Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday, October 14, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Maawanji’idiwin – “The Place Where We Come Together” Medicine Wheel and Community Gathering Area located in the courtyard near the Yellowjacket Union.
The University of Wisconsin-Superior will hold a celebration for Indigenous Peoples Day on Monday, October 14, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Maawanji’idiwin – “The Place Where We Come Together” Medicine Wheel and Community Gathering Area located in the courtyard near the Yellowjacket Union. In the event of inclement weather, this celebration will move indoors to the Yellowjacket Union - Shippar Family Atrium.
Following the ceremony will be a program presented by the Woodland Sky Native American Dance Group at 5:30 p.m. in Old Main’s Thorpe Langley Auditorium. Both family-friendly events are free and open to the community.
“We are excited to once again celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day on our campus, this time with the City of Superior as they share the city’s resolution to recognize this important day,” said Kat Werchouski, assistant director for the Department of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. “It is crucial that we continue to acknowledge the history of this region and our country while still honoring the indigenous people and cultures that are very much here – alive and strong in community and contribution.”
This celebration is sponsored by UW-Superior’s Division of Student Affairs, First Nations Studies, Department of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and the City of Superior. The Yellowjacket Union is located at 1605 Catlin Ave. Old Main is located at 1710 Weeks Ave.
