The University of Wisconsin-Superior’s legal studies and criminal justice program recently held its fall 2019 Senior Year Experience Event, which highlighted the achievements of seven mid-year graduating seniors Zach Bennett, Claire Jackson, Aaron Mesedahl, Tammy Pupp, Jarid Rankila, Jake Spencer and Colin Welch.

“So many wonderful stories to share from this group,” said Nathan LaCoursiere, senior lecturer. “One notable aspect of this graduating cohort is that we are saying goodbye to several promising future law enforcement officers.”

Rankila interned as a park ranger with the Duluth Police Department and focused his final presentation on empathetic and ethical policing.

Mesedahl, a student program representative, focused his senior year experience on emotional intelligence in community policing.

Jackson interned with the Ottawa National Forest Service in her home state of Michigan. Jaskson loved the experience so much that she is now actively pursuing permanent placement with the Forest Service.

Several pre-law students are graduating, including Bennett, who served as a summer law clerk at the Riverside District Attorney’s Office near his hometown in California.

Welch plans to attend graduate school within the fields of social work and criminal justice.  Over the past year, Welch has been volunteering his time to help launch a new collaboration between UW-Superior and the St. Louis County DWI Court – specifically Screening, Brief Intervention & Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Program for first time, fourth-degree misdemeanor DWI offenders.
