The Superior Middle and High School orchestras joined with the University of Wisconsin-Superior Chamber Strings for the fourth annual Superior String Day at UW-Superior.

For the nearly 70 students, the day began at noon and concluded with a free, public performance in the Thorpe Langley Auditorium.

The concert included Amy Eichers, director of the Superior Middle School Orchestra, Jean Leibfried, director of the Superior High School Orchestra, and Dr. Erin Aldridge, director of the UW-Superior Chamber Strings.

“Amy, Jean, and I are all members of the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra,” said Dr. Erin Aldridge, professor of Music at UW-Superior. “At a rehearsal we started talking about our respective school orchestras and about how much fun it would be to collaborate.”

The middle and high school students started the day working with special guest Randy Sabien, who has over 35 years of performing experience as a contemporary violinist.

“We all met Randy when he was a guest artist for the DSSO,” said Aldridge. “We had several performances with him, which gave us time to talk and get to know him. We of course knew about his great reputation as a player, but in talking it was clear he had great passion for education, and we all thought he would be a wonderful clinician to work with our students.”

Sabien’s career includes touring as singer and songwriter Jim Post’s sideman, recording with Greg Brown, appearing on Austin City Limits with Kate Wolf, guest on Prairie Home Companion, shows with Corky Siegel, to leading his own bands often featuring triple fiddles. He founded the string department at the Berkee College of Music in Boston in 1978 and now heads the string department at McNally Smith College of Music in St. Paul. Sabien is the author of the groundbreaking jazz method for strings “Jazz Philharmonic,” published by Alfred Music.
