New Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

Jerel Benton most recently served as the Director of African American Affairs at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn.

As the University of Wisconsin-Superior begins its spring semester there are many new faces on campus. Jerel Benton is just one to be making his introduction to UW-Superior.

As the new Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Benton brings a wealth of experience and will both guide campus Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion efforts and act as UW-Superior’s Affirmative Action Officer.

“I am excited about my new role on campus,” said Benton. “Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion has an awesome opportunity to have an impact on students, faculty and staff, and the campus and Superior community at large. The work that we do is important to student development as our students will utilize these skill to navigate the workforce and be productive citizens in our communities. I have met many faculty, staff, and students who are passionate about the work that we will be doing, and they are looking forward to working with us in this process.”

UW-Superior currently hosts more than 200 international students – marking the largest and most diverse international enrollment in university history. These students from nearly 50 different countries contribute to UW-Superior holding the second largest percentage of undergraduate international students among all the schools in the UW system.

Benton most recently served as the Director of African American Affairs at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn. In this role, Benton, developed a three-year strategic plan to enhance the programs and services for the Center for African American Affairs. He was also responsible for developing ongoing programs that enrich cultural and social connections. He provided personal, career, academic and financial advising to students as needed. Benton also supervised student and professional staff, managed unit budgets, and served a principal investigator on a grant submitted and funded by to the Office of Higher Education.

Prior to working at MSU-Mankato, Benton served as the Associate Director of University Assessment and Testing at Morehead State University, in Morehead, Ky. In this role he managed the University assessment processes with an emphasis on administrative and educational support unit assessments and provided expertise on the use of multiple advanced statistical methods to assemble statistical reports and analyze assessment results.

Before that, Benton served as the institution’s Minority Retention Coordinator for four years. In this role; he collected and analyzed data on specific programs serving under-represented populations, tracked the graduation and retention rates of the Diversity Scholars while providing interventions when needed. Benton was also responsible for monitoring, tracking, and reporting academic progression, retention, and graduation rates of minority students.
