Platner inducted into Communicating Arts’ Wall of Service

Platner received his B.A. degree in Communications from St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis. He completed his M.F.A. in Theatre Design and Technology at the University of Wisconsin.

He was a Guest Artist in Design at UW-Superior in 1976, returning in 1977 as a faculty member in the Theatre and Speech Communication areas and the Resident Designer/Technical Director for University Theatre. During his tenure at UW-Superior, he designed more than 60 productions and was technical director for more than 100 productions. He developed a Study Away program in theatre for the Wisconsin in Scotland program in Dalkeith, Scotland. In 2012 he served as their Resident Academic Director.

Platner served as the Chair of the Department for more than nine years and the Interim Dean of Students from 2005-07. He was a member of both University and Faculty Senates’ Executive Committees, serving as the Chair of Faculty Senate in 1995. He was the UW-Superior Faculty Representative to UW System Administration for nearly two years. He initiated the Wall of Service recognition program so that future generations would recognize that their success was built on the foundational work of others.  

He worked with many campus committees including the Campus Physical Development Committee, Academic Affairs Committee, the Planning, Budget and Review Council and the Co-Chair Student Center Renovation Committee. Platner also served on the Board of Directors for Duluth’s Renegade Comedy Theatre Company and the Lake Superior International Fiddle Contest.
