Twelve UW-Superior students will attend the bi-annual Stein Lecture

It is not every day that a group of UW-Superior students get to hear the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court speak … but that is exactly what will happen on October 16.

Twelve Pre-Law Society (and legal studies and criminal justice majors) members will attend the bi-annual Stein Lecture hosted by the University of Minnesota Law School where they will hear Chief Justice John Robertys, Jr.

Legal studies senior lecturer Nathan LaCoursiere and legal studies professor Maria Cuzzo are both alumni of the University of Minnesota Law School. Together, they recruited four other Minnesota Law School alumni and by the combined efforts of these legal professionals, UW-Superior obtained 12 tickets. Judge Michael Cuzzo, Superior Water, Light & Power corporate counsel Deb Amberg, attorney Alex Hontos and assistant St. Louis County attorney Nora Sandstad were the supportive legal professionals that all called in as alumni to obtain the tickets.

Pre-Law Society members planning to attend the event include Sydney Mastey, Edriana Dennard, Lane Empson, Bella Gigliotti, Autumn Bass, Chris Huard, Kelsey Kutter, Kalel Yates, Jacob Spencer, Marinel Walfridsson, Iveel Munkhbaatar, and Desiray Matthews.

“The Stein Lecture is a perfect example of the experiential learning opportunities offered at UW-Superior,” said Cuzzo, program coordinator for the legal studies and criminal justice program. “By working closely with our legal and justice professionals, our students have this unique and life-changing opportunity to hear Chief Justice John Roberts, Jr. speak. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Two years ago, a six-member Pre-Law Society team traveled to the Stein Lecture that hosted Justice Sonia Sotomayor and an in-person meeting. Students from that team wrote personal letters to the regional law and justice professionals who assisted in obtaining the tickets as University of Minnesota Law School alumni.

The Pre-Law Society is a student organization dedicated to help students find their fit in the legal community and aiding in applying to law school.
