SOAR programs successful in new online format

UW-Superior’s Summer Orientation Advisement and Registration (SOAR) is often the first opportunity for incoming students to get a taste for what the university is all about. At these events, students learn about campus resources and activities, and meet with faculty, staff and fellow new students.

Yet, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UW-Superior was forced to move all summer orientation programs to a virtual platform. The first took place June 8 with a maximum capacity of nearly 60 students in attendance. Thanks to hard work and dedication from throughout campus, new students were still able to discover everything that makes UW-Superior such a special place.

“I think it went great,” said Jeremy Nere, executive director of admissions at UW-Superior. “Obviously, it was very different than our on-campus SOARs of the past, but it still encompassed the high-touch, engaged discussion and personal connections that we do so well.”

Virtual SOAR events include two parts. The first is a live Zoom session from 9 a.m. to noon. Following this, students receive an email to schedule a one-hour, one-on-one virtual advising appointment by Zoom or phone with an academic advisor to help register for fall classes. These appointments take place in the two weeks after a student’s virtual SOAR.

“It was a big lift to move this online, but we had tremendous support from across campus,” said Nere. “We had so many staff and faculty willing to help and do whatever it took to make this a success. Our campus understands the importance of engaging new students early in the enrollment process and they were excited to have this opportunity.”

While SOAR has moved to an online format, students are still invited to involve family members in the event and even share the Zoom link.

“I think the uniqueness of this program really stands out,” said Nere. “We had information sessions, a student panel, faculty/advisor breakout sessions, a virtual exhibit hall and Q&A throughout. The level of Q&A is also something that really stood out to me. Students and parents really engaged and asked great questions.”

Additional Virtual SOAR dates are Friday, June 19, (at capacity and closed for registration), Monday, July 13, (at capacity and closed for registration) and Monday, August 10.
