UW-Superior students, from left, Emma Salden, Greta Weisel, Andy Anderson and Anissa Peppersack help tell the story of the hilarious plight of a young couple who move into a centuries-old house, only to find that it is haunted by a distressingly capricious, maddeningly tenacious yet undeniably appealing witch in the Jonathan Troy play “All Because of Agatha.”
Performances, directed by Kirsten Hambleton, will take place on November 10, 11, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and November 12 and 19 at 2 p.m.
University of Wisconsin-Superior Theatre will present “All Because of Agatha” in the Manion Theatre located in the Holden Fine and Applied Arts Center on the UW-Superior campus.
Written by Jonathan Troy, “All Because of Agatha” is filled with bright, funny dialogue and a cast of thoroughly delightful characters.
“It is a comedy with some elements of farce built in,” said Kirsten Hambleton, director of the production. “It follows the story of a couple that knowingly buys a house that is haunted annually by the ghost of a witch, burned during the Salem Witch Trials. The wife has convinced herself that this would be an adventure into the unknown as she is swept up by the trendy occult movement of the early 60s. Agatha, the witch, shows up and really doesn’t know what to do about all this.”
For Hambleton, much of the appeal of this play is due to its unfamiliarity.
“One of the reasons this show seemed appealing is because I had never heard of it before,” she said. The story line and characters seemed like a show that would be fun to direct for me, because it was all new and it also seemed like a great opportunity for actors to create some memorable characters onstage. This is a show that can be enjoyed by persons of all ages and we hope that the audience will have as much fun as we are having putting this all together.”
