Transportation and Logistics Management students attend IANA Intermodal Expo in Long Beach

Eight Transportation and Logistics Management students, along with department faculty and staff, traveled recently to Long Beach, California, for the IANA Intermodal Expo. The event, which was cancelled last year due to the pandemic, is an annual highlight for UW-Superior Transportation and Logistics majors.

Students had the opportunity to hear presentations from leaders in the transportation and logistics field, network with employers and industry thought leaders, and tour the Long Beach seaport.

“It was amazing to have the opportunity to talk with professionals from the intermodal world,” said UWS student Gianluca Marcucci. “As a student, this was a unique chance to network with businesses, and an experience that I will never forget. I’m thankful for the IANA organizers and everyone at UWS for making this possible, as I understand how much work and commitment goes into it.”

UW-Superior, which is one of seven IANA Scholarship Universities, was also an exhibitor at the event this year to promote its Transportation and Logistics Management bachelor’s degree program that is now offered online, as well as on campus--making it more accessible to people worldwide. UWS also offers a degree in Business Administration with a Supply Chain Management concentration.  Many students take both as a double major.

“From toilet paper to microchips to personal protective equipment, the increased demand for goods during the pandemic has shown a spotlight on the essential role of transportation and supply chains,” said Dr. Daniel Rust, UWS associate professor. “The IANA Expo was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn how stakeholders throughout the intermodal transportation network are addressing current challenges, and an invaluable opportunity to meet in person with industry professionals.  Dr. Stewart, Dr. Cao and I thank the Intermodal Association of North America for making it possible for our students to participate in this outstanding event.”

An unexpected bonus highlight of the trip happened when President Biden stayed overnight at the same hotel as the UW-Superior group. Students met and took a picture with one of the Secret Service agents and witnessed the President’s motorcade.

Our highly acclaimed Transportation and Logistics Management (TLM) program is now offered 100% online, as well as on-campus. The award-winning program has placed hundreds of graduates into transportation and logistics management positions throughout the world. UW-Superior is one of only ten IANA Scholarship Universities with student teams consistently earning top honors at the IANA Intercollegiate Case Study Competition.
