TRIO programs move celebration online

Due to COVID-19, several programs at the University of Wisconsin-Superior were forced to move its annual TRIO Day celebration online.

“Graduation should be an exciting time for us,” said Angie Hugdahl MSE , director of Upward Bound. “However, COVID-19 has put a bit of a damper on celebrations. As we near graduation is it also important to recognize those students who have had accomplishments of all kinds.”

TRIO programs, which include Upward Bound, Student Support Services and the McNair Scholars Program, were able to organize a virtual meeting to recognize individuals for accomplishments during the past year.

Taylor Pearson, a graduating senior from Superior High School, was named student of the year. She was presented a certificate for her hard work, diligence, and dedication, and will be included on the student of the year plaque in the Upward Bound office.

Madeline Scanlan, a sophomore from Madison, Wisconsin, double majoring in biology and environmental science, was recognized as tutor of the year.

“Her dedication to providing tutoring and mentoring our Upward Bound students over the past year has been extraordinary and we are looking forward to bringing her back next year,” said Hugdahl.

UW-Superior sophomore Angel Raddatz received the $1,400 UW-Superior Foundation Gulland Scholarship. This will aid Raddatz, a 2018 grad form Superior High School, in her quest to be the first in her family to graduate from college.

Heather Rickerl, UW-Superior assistant director of Career Services, was named the 2020 TRIO Outstanding Staff member.

“Thank you to TRIO program’s staff and students for this award,” said Rickerl. “It is my pleasure to be able to work with and serve this group of students throughout their time at UWS. I love seeing the growth and change, as well as hearing about the challenges and successes. You make us all proud.”

Amanda Foster, Jessica Borntrager and Myriah Schilling were recognized as 2020 Student Success Coaches.

Samuel Dettle, math, and Mingma Sherpa, ASC, received Student Services-TRIO Achiever Awards as Outstanding Tutors. Kaitlin Roth received Outstanding Supplemental Instructor.

Student Services-TRIO Outstanding Student Awards went to Ashley Sucher and Haley Stalls.

“Congratulations to all the recipients on their well-deserved honors,” said Hugdahl.
