UW-Superior enrollment bucks the trend, holds steady

UW System schools released preliminary enrollment data for the 2019-2020 school year last week and UW-Superior was one of only five UW institutions that saw enrollment stay steady or increase from last school year. UW-Superior reported an increase of two students year-over-year – a victory in the eyes of university leaders, given the decline in graduating high school seniors in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

“We were up by two first-year students and this underscores the importance of helping every student discover UW-Superior and persist,” said Renée Wachter, UW-Superior chancellor. “Each one of our staff and faculty play an important role in making that happen, and I want to thank everyone for all they did to help us buck the nationwide downward enrollment trend.”

The addition of 766 new students this fall brings UW-Superior’s total enrollment to 2,604, marking the first time since 2013 that the university’s enrollment has crested 2,600. The new students include 327 freshmen, 324 transfer and 115 graduate students.

UW-Superior’s growth can be attributed to several factors, including the university’s increasingly strong reputation for a quality education at an affordable cost, the small campus environment with opportunities often only found at much larger universities, programs and services that support all students in attaining academic success, and growth in online program offerings.

“Two years ago, we began Superior Jump Start, a program that allows students to move in early and participate in planned activities to help them acclimate to campus and gain the resources and connections needed to be successful,” said Jerel Benton, Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. “This program is clearly making a difference in not only attracting students, but also retaining them.”

UW-Superior’s top majors by enrollment include:

  • Elementary Education
  • Business Administration
  • Physical Education
  • Biology
  • Social Work
  • Psychology
  • Communicating Arts
  • Transportation & Logistics Management
  • Legal Studies
  • Interdisciplinary Studies
