Children from Mrs. Drahos’ 4K class at Superior Cathedral School came for a visit to campus this week. They had lots of fun meeting Buzz, visiting the chancellor’s office, and getting some UWS goodies to take home, but their visit had a larger educational purpose, as well. The children came at the invitation of Anne Robertson, senior lecturer in the Education Department, to participate in her Early Childhood Methods class, part of the Teacher Education Program at UWS.

The children participated in six play-based learning stations in the areas of literacy, math, sensory, fine/gross motor, music and movement, and visual arts. UWS students designed the activities and got to test them out firsthand with the 4K students.

“Having the children from Cathedral come gave my students extra exposure to this type of experience,” said Robertson. “You can talk about teaching and learning theory all you want, but actually getting to put it into practice is a completely different experience. I just want to thank Cathedral for partnering with us and helping create a mutually-beneficial opportunity for all our students.”

Since its founding in 1893 as Superior Normal School, UW-Superior has been a frontrunner in the UW System for its offerings in PK-12 education. The Elementary Education Major prepares students to teach either grades PK-6 (birth through age 12) or grades 1-8 (age 6 through age 13-14) and is often paired with an Early Childhood Minor.
