The Macalester Trials is one of the largest fields in the United States the weekend of November 3-5, in St. Paul. More than 46 teams competed at the Macalester Trials with over 350 Mock Trialers from around the nation. UW-Superior fielded two teams at Macalester.
At the Macalester Trials, Scott Holmes led an outstanding field of Witness Performances with a perfect performance of 20 points to be named one of the top witnesses out of more than 250 witness performances. Holmes portrayed a street performer named Waters and created a unique characterization providing key evidence in the criminal case. Holmes is a second year Mocker and a captain of the team.
Holmes repeated his outstanding witness performance by winning an Outstanding Witness award at the Ole Open hosted by St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., the weekend of November 17-19. Benjamin Dorff and Marinel Walfridsson joined Holmes to win Outstanding Witness awards in this field by also being named to the top slots in witness characterizations.
The following students competed at one or both of these invitationals: Melody Maleski, Autumn Bass, Reggie Semanko, Scott Holmes, Tyler Modderman-Anderson, Darien Bottila, Marinel Walfridsson, Tiffany Nelson, Kenneth Benz, Arabella Gigliotti, Lane Empson, Benjamin Dorff, Desiray Matthews, Brittany Hewitt, Jadie Schwarzkopf, and Libby Gray. Most of these Mockers earned nominations for either Outstanding Attorney or Outstanding Witness performances in single rounds of competition at one or both of these tournaments.
The team is coached by Dr. Maria Cuzzo (Legal Studies & Criminal Justice Program), Cassy and Eric Burr, Mark Fruehauf and Jaramy Hansen.
The team next competes at the Superior Durst Mock Trial Invitational this coming weekend at UW-Superior. All four rounds of competition are open to the public for viewing. Please check campus calendar for more details.
