UW-Superior Music Department University Recital Series to feature Héctor Landa and Virginia Covarrubias
SUPERIOR, Wis. – Guest pianist Virginia Covarrubias will travel from Miami to join local artists Héctor Landa, piano; Brett Jones, percussion; Jeremy Craycraft, percussion; and Vincent Osborn, double bass; as the University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department presents its University Recital Series on Tuesday, February 12, at 7:30 p.m. in UW-Superior’s Thorpe Langley Auditorium.
“The audience should expect to experience an eclectic, not so common, but very accessible and tuneful program,” said Landa, assistant professor of piano at UW-Superior. “It has definitively been a fun concert to put together and we are very thrilled to present this repertoire to our local audience.”
The evening will be highlighted by the Twin Ports premiere of Steve Reich’s “Quartet” (2014).
“The piece by Steve Reich has been only performed in a handful of American and European cities, but not in this part of the country,” said Landa. “Reich is one of the few superstar living composers of contemporary music. His style is easily recognizable, very hard to perform and put together, but at the same time pleasing to the ear.”
Also to be performed will be Claude Bolling’s “Sonata for Two Pianists” and “Jazz Ensemble No. 1.”
“Claude Bolling became a sensation in the 1970s and 80s when he wrote compositions that made classical instruments such as traverse flute, trumpet, cello, or violin jump back and forth between classical and jazz styles,” said Landa. “Bolling was certainly not the first one to attempt this crossover, but his compositions succeeded at combining classically trained musicians and jazz performers.”
The concert will also feature Keith Jarrett’s “Moonchild/In Your Quiet Place” adding to a combination of styles rarely heard in the region with French jazz and American minimalism side by side.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. The Thorpe Langley Auditorium is located in Old Main, 1710 Weeks Ave. For questions or additional information, call (715) 394-8115 or email music@uwsuper.edu.
