UW-Superior team takes part in Nearly Naked Ruck March
A 10-member team from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, the VNSC Misfits, tested its physical abilities while braving the elements to take part in the recent 23rd Veteran’s Nearly Naked Ruck March. The event raised more than $76,000 for the program.
Now in its fourth year, the Nearly Naked Ruck March began at Skyline Parkway in Duluth. More than 360 participants departed wearing long underwear – and often less – while carrying a pack for a 1-mile loop around Enger Tower for a maximum of 10 times. The weight of the pack during this 10-mile roundtrip is determined by the amount of donations collected.
The team from UW-Superior was made up of Staff Sergeant Nicholas Gustafson, Josh Hogan, Kyle Horton, Benny Plante, Ryan Lovaas, Staff Sergeant David Daley, Monte Stewart, Nathan Nelson, Rachel Turner, and Sam Zurian.
“It is a great event to take part in year after year,” said Stewart, UW-Superior Veteran and Nontraditional Student Services Coordinator. “It’s a blast to be a part of this. Our team has a lot of fun. This year, we carried all five military branch flags, the POW/MIA flag, the American flag, and a UW-Superior flag.
At the finish line, more than 5,000 pounds of the food, clothing and other items carried in packs by participants during the race were donated to the DAV.
“The community really turns out to support our veterans at this event,” said Stewart. “This event continues to grow year after year and I’m really impressed at the donations people were able to collect.”
