UW-Superior to host Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies Conference

This conference will focus on innovative evidence-based approaches to reducing the effects of obesity

The University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Center for Continuing Education will be hosting the Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies conference on Tuesday, March 20, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Swenson Hall on the UW-Superior campus.

This conference will focus on innovative evidence-based approaches to reducing the effects of obesity by addressing root causes. Experts from the Twin Ports will present on aspects of obesity across the lifespan and what can be done to help achieve better health. Presentations will include “Childhood Obesity and Lifelong Consequences” by Kim LeBard-Rankila, Ph.D., health sciences and public health, LPTA, UW-Superior, “Trauma, Mental Health, and Obesity: Where do they Intersect?” by Carin Mizera, DSW, LICSW, The College of St. Scholastica, and “A Functional Nutrition Approach to Obesity: Food as Medicine” by Jean Larson, registered dietitian, integrative/functional medicine, Essentia Health. All three will participate in a panel discussion for the final session of the day.  

Obesity has become an epidemic in the United States as the percent of those affected at any age increases. According to the Center for Disease Control, more than 35 percent of adults in the U.S. have obesity. Since the 1970s, the percentage of children and adolescents affected by obesity has more than tripled. Healthcare costs to treat obesity and the many chronic diseases related to it are estimated to exceed $147 billion each year.

General admission is $65 and $25 for individuals over 60, students and parish nurses. A CEU certificate is available for an additional $10. This event will qualify for six contact hours (.6 CEUs). To register, call (715) 394-8170 . Swenson Hall is located at 1610 Weeks Ave.
