More than 25 high school mockers and their coaches attended the event representing three different high school programs in the Twin Cities

Five experienced UW-Superior Mock Trial team members traveled with Coach Dr. Maria Cuzzo to Mounds View High School in Shoreview, Minn., on November 29, 2017, for a free three-hour institute on skills. More than 25 high school mockers and their coaches attended the event representing three different high school programs in the Twin Cities region. The event was supported and underwritten by the Admissions Office and  Emily Kraemer from the Admissions Office coordinated the on-site details for the event.

UW-Superior students Melody Maleski, Reggie Semanko, Kenneth Benz, Arabella Gigliotti and Autumn Bass were the primary trainer/educators for this skills institute. They designed and offered skills development on the fundamentals of Mock Trial including opening statements, direct examinations, cross examination, rules of evidence and closing statements. Dr. Cuzzo provided training on winning judge’s ballots, case mapping and professional decorum.

This is an example of ongoing efforts in the Legal Studies & Criminal Justice program to provide applied and experiential learning experiences both inside and outside of class for our students.

"Our experienced Mock Trialers were willing to make the time and give the energy to teach others who are younger in this national program," said Cuzzo. "They were able to share their experiences as Mock Trial team members at UW-Superior. This shows a community engagement commitment and allowed UW-Superior to showcase the great learning opportunities available for potential students looking at colleges."

This is an annual event that UW-Superior Mock Trial designs and provides for the continued outreach efforts of this university.

The Mock Trial team competes next at the Superior Durst Mock Trial Invitational hosted on campus. More than 150 mockers, their coaches and numerous community judges, attorneys and paralegals will participate in this annual event.  If you’d like to watch a round of competition, contact Dr. Maria Cuzzo for more details of the schedule. You are welcome to attend any round of competition.
