Overview

The Early Childhood Education Minor is designed to introduce students to developmentally appropriate practices for children from birth to grade 3. The program will give you the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to plan and teach a curriculum that will foster the growth and development of young children. Students gain hands-on experiences early in the program and have multiple opportunities to work with all age bands in the early childhood sector.

This program is available on campus and online.

What You’ll Learn

This minor is excellent preparation for students pursuing careers in education (e.g., early childhood, administration, parent education), law (e.g., child and family advocacy), social services (e.g., family casework, child welfare, licensing, child protection, child policy) or in various health-related areas (e.g., pediatrics, nursing, Child Life Specialist) involving children. It is also a great fit for students interested in gaining a broader understanding of children and families in today’s society.

  • Early childhood methods
  • Child guidance
  • Inclusive practices for young children
  • Mathematical concepts and early literacies methods in early childhood
  • Play and nature-based pedagogies
  • Child psychology
  • Foundations of early childhood

*This minor must be accompanied by the Elementary Education Major and the Instruction Minor for graduates to be eligible for Wisconsin Birth – Grade 3 teacher licensure. This license also requires candidates to complete and pass approved pedagogical knowledge assessments, Wisconsin Foundations of Reading Test or assessment, and content area knowledge assessment.
