Physical Education – Grades K-12

Students being active in the fieldhouse

UW-Superior’s Physical Education K-12 licensure program combines the subject matter expertise of our Health and Human Performance Department with the excellence of our teacher education program to prepare you for a rewarding career as a physical education teacher for K-12 students in a wide variety of settings.

Many Physical Education students enhance their employment options by completing minors or certificates in CoachingHealth Education or Adaptive Physical Education.

Certification for licensure requires completion of the teacher certification coursework and student teaching. You will have opportunities in grades K-12 classrooms throughout your coursework.

Student Teaching

In addition to opportunities in grades K-12 physical education classrooms throughout your coursework, you will complete a full semester of student teaching at the end of your degree and licensure program. Our Field Experience Coordinator will help you find placements that fit your individual goals and in locations that work for you.

Coaching Licensure

Curriculum automatically fulfills Wisconsin K-12 coaching licensure requirements. A separate coaching minor is not required.

No Enrollment Cap

Unlike many universities, our education programs do not have an enrollment cap, meaning there is no enrollment limit for students who meet admissions guidelines.

What You’ll Learn

Our physical education K-12 licensure program is based on the seven dimensions of wellness:

  • Physical
  • Intellectual
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual
  • Career
  • Social
  • Environmental

We seek to serve all students in a caring educational environment that fosters their intellectual growth and interest in wellness for life. We aim to develop critical thinking skills, positive attitudes, and personal responsibility in all students. We want to inspire them to lead productive and healthy lifestyles. Our goal is to develop certified Physical Education teachers who are engaged in their professional endeavors and who are able to share their knowledge and skills with diverse populations in a variety of school settings.

Through the program, you’ll learn that:

  • Learning takes place best when there is an emotional attachment; therefore, students need to be engaged in the curriculum.
  • Attitudes are caught, not taught. Teachers must be excited about their courses and teaching environment.
  • As we learn to move, we move to learn. We all have the responsibility to become aware of and learn to respect diversity among people.
  • The teaching-learning process is a two-way street. The student-teacher relationship should revolve around good, honest communication, valued learning experiences and assessments. It should bring about expected outcomes for both parties.

Program Outcomes/Career Opportunities

There is a well-documented nationwide shortage of teachers, and UWS physical education teachers are in high demand. The vast majority of our graduates find teaching jobs upon graduation, and many have multiple opportunities to choose from.
