Breakaway: Pre-Orientation Wilderness Trip

Orient yourself to Duluth-Superior and the surrounding natural beauty through Breakaway - a pre-orientation outdoor adventure experience for incoming students. Breakaway helps connect incoming students with each other, while being led by experienced student guides. The staff will help answer questions about UW-Superior, and will teach you how to safely experience the outdoors. Breakaway is designed for any level of outdoor skills and knowledge (from little to none to those with experience in the backcountry. All are welcome! No experience is necessary!

Choose between Backpacking the Superior Hiking Trail or Canoeing the Namekagon River.
Backpacking the Superior Hiking Trail:
One the premier backpacking trails in the Midwest and United States, the Superior Hiking Trail, boasts over 310 miles of trail that starts south of Duluth and heads all the way to the Canadian border. The Superior Hiking Trail is known as the best long hike between the Appalachian Trail and the Continental Divide. The trail follows the ridgeline overlooking Lake Superior, and provides some of the best views of the lake. Sightings of moose and bald eagles are possible along this trip. Join us as we hike this beautiful trail and take in all the beautiful scenery!
Namekagon River Canoe Trip:
One of Wisconsin's premier canoeing rivers where abundant wildlife, such as bald eagles and otters can be found, and where a mixture of calm and swift gentle rapids are fun paddle spot. The Namekagon River has served as vital part of river travel for connecting people to the St. Croix and then onto the Mississippi River. The Namekagon River offers fresh experiences for all. Join us as we canoe this beautiful river and look for the abundance of wildlife that call this river home!
