Orient yourself to Duluth-Superior and the surrounding natural beauty through Breakaway - a pre-orientation outdoor adventure experience for incoming first-year students. Choose between kayaking the Apostle Islands, canoeing the Namekagon River, or backpacking the Superior Hiking Trail.
Connect with fellow incoming students while being led by experienced student guides. The staff will help answer questions about UW-Superior and will teach you how to safely experience the outdoors.
No experience is necessary. However, we recommend that all participants be in good physical condition.
Kayaking the Apostle Islands:
With red sandstone cliffs, rock pillars and honeycombs next to rich blue waters, the sea caves along the the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore from unforgettable exquisite scenery. Explore the depths of the sea caves, kayaking through them and among the 21 islands, camping on several and discovering their beauty and secrets. Namekagon River Canoe Trip:
One of Wisconsin's best canoeing rivers where abundant wildlife, calm river, and swift rapids can be found, the Namekagon River offers fresh experiences for all. Join us as we canoe this beautiful river and look for the abundance of wildlife that call this river home. Explore this windy river and experience Wisconsin's countryside firsthand.
Backpacking the Superior Hiking Trail:
The Superior Hiking Trail parallels the beautiful shores of Lake Superior! Join us as we backpack and camp along the beautiful scenery of Lake Superior, and hike a portion of this incredible 296 mile trail!
Dates for all Trips: Sunday, August 23 - Saturday, August 29
Cost:$300 includes all necessary gear, meals, and transportation. $100 deposit required with registration.
