Major/area of study:

Elementary Education/Minor in Language Arts

What drew you to UW-Superior?

I live down in Cloquet and wanted somewhere local. As I investigated local colleges I considered their education program, cost, and size. I also considered a community college for my generals. My decision was to get on a four year campus right away, I wanted the familiarity to start right away and build through my college career. The cost was 3rd most important, this is after all for my career, but UWS was an economically better choice with reciprocity being a Minnesota resident. Size was the 2nd most important criteria, I truly did not want to feel lost in the shuffle as it can be at some of the larger schools. Teacher to student ratios are very favorable. Most important was the education department itself. The qualifications for the state of Wisconsin are ‘Superior’ to those of Minnesota for teaching requirements. I was also assured that I did not have to root for the Packers!

How does being a veteran or a nontraditional student (25+, married, or parent) affect your progress toward a college degree?

For me I am in all three groups. I was in the Minnesota National Guard in the 1980’s, which gives you an idea that I am over 25, I am also divorced with a 17 year old son. The military portion was in the 80’s but it is nice having that experience under my belt. Having my son who is with me, makes some days more challenged than others. He doesn’t drive so appointments and the like I have to get him to. While school is a priority, my son in number one!

How has the VNSC assisted you in adjusting to life on campus?

I spent all my off time from classes here last year and really got to know the staff. Monte, the director, calmed me down after my first day when I was feeling overwhelmed. I participated in some of their events and used them to help me acclimate to college life. Lindsey also helped me get my son on the giving tree last Christmas when I was in my first year of being a poor college student.

Any campus activities / extra-curricular (clubs, etc):

I have just joined the mock trial team here on campus.
