Estimated Expenses for International Students

Here at UW-Superior, we recognize the importance of our international students to the vibrancy of our campus community and the greater region. To help make a UW-Superior education and experience possible, we offer several scholarships and financial awards. In fact, more than 90% of on-campus international undergraduate students who qualify for admission also qualify for a scholarship of $5,500 to $7,500 per year.

Below are the estimated expenses for the nine-month 2023-2024 academic year for an international undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

Undergraduate Nonresident Tuition/Fees (Per Year)$16,605
Residence Hall/Partial Meal Plan$7,230
Tuition, Fees, Room and Meals (Total)*$23,835*
*Does not include scholarship and campus job opportunities available to many international students. Figures are for full-time, on-campus students (12-18 credits per semester) enrolled for the full academic year, most affordable double room and estimated 12 meal/week meal plan.

Additional Expense Information

  • The figures above do not include medical insurance, which is required and costs $2,135 for 12 months of coverage, or books and supplies, for which students should budget approximately $1,050 per year.
  • Also not included above are orientation fees ($230) or personal expenses, which each individual student ultimately determines. We estimate that students should budget at least $1,400 per year for personal expenses.
  • Summer-related expenses and online classes are not included in the figures above.
  • Student-athletes are charged a one-time athletic apparel fee of $150-250 (depending on their sport) in their first semester only.
  • The average increase for university-related expenses in the U.S. is approximately 3-5% per year.

UW-Superior Foundation Scholarships

The UW-Superior Foundation sponsors scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students. International students who have already begun their studies at UW-Superior are eligible to apply for over 100 Foundation scholarships, which are generally awarded by individual academic departments. In the most recent year, 55% of scholarship applicants were approved for an average scholarship of $1,500.

Student Employment

Many UW-Superior international students hold jobs on campus. U.S. immigration laws allow for student employment under specific conditions.

  • Most international students seeking work and willing to work a range of jobs, including in food service, Residence Life, tutoring services and campus recreation have found work. The minimum wage in Wisconsin is $10.50 per hour
  • International students in F-1 status are allowed to work on campus up to 20 hours per week while school is in session and full-time during breaks and holidays.
  • Off-campus employment is not allowed except under limited conditions set out by U.S. immigration laws.
  • Although it is not possible to pay for all tuition and fees with student employment, it is a great way to earn ‘pocket money’ and make useful connections on campus.

The Office of Intercultural Student Success provides guidance about finding on-campus jobs during international student orientation, and students are responsible for finding their own employment.
