Overview

UW-Superior was founded as a teacher education college in 1893, and we remain committed to that strong heritage of innovation and quality in our education programs today. The early childhood, elementary, high school and specialty area educator preparation programs each equip students to serve as educators who will make a lasting difference in the lives of their students. Teaching is one of the world’s most impactful professions, and it can also be one of the most challenging and rapidly changing. Our faculty keep pace with these changes, teaching the latest instructional methods and best practices for supporting students’ unique academic and social-emotional needs in diverse and inclusive classrooms.

Program

The Educational Studies major is a non-licensure pathway that provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the role of education in society, without leading to teacher licensure. Students receive a formal education in teaching and learning in non-traditional educational settings and is ideal for those who are interested in education, human development and teaching in non-traditional settings. It is also a flexible option for students who began a licensure track but found it wasn’t the best fit, allowing them to apply many of those earned credits toward this degree.

The Educational Studies major is available in both on-campus and fully online formats, offering students the flexibility to pursue their degree in a way that meets their individual needs. The major is non-comprehensive, meaning a minor is required to complete the 120-credit graduation requirement.

What You’ll Learn

Students in the Educational Studies program engage in a broad curriculum that explores the social, cultural, historical and philosophical foundations of education. Students can select courses of interest in the field of educational studies to provide them with knowledge and skills related to learning.

The program culminates in a capstone course where students complete an independent, interdisciplinary project that reflects their academic and professional interests. Coursework emphasizes real-world application of teaching and learning principles in non-traditional settings.

Maximum Flexibility

With the ability to complete this entire degree either on-campus or online, students have ample flexibility to balance their responsibilities outside of school while completing their degree here.

Non-Licensure

The Educational Studies program does not lead to a teaching license. Instead, it prepares students for roles in education-related fields that do not require licensure. Students who plan to teach in traditional classroom settings should pursue one of UW-Superior’s licensure programs. However, this major is an excellent option for those who want to support learning and development in informal or community-based educational environments.

Career Opportunities

Students graduate prepared to make a meaningful impact in educational roles that extend beyond the traditional classroom. This degree opens doors to a variety of education-adjacent careers in fields where teaching, communication and program coordination are essential. Graduates may pursue roles such as:

  • Academic advisor or coach
  • Instructional designer
  • Education specialist in non-profit organizations
  • Camp counselor or director
  • Museum educator or guide
  • Student coordinator or mentor
  • Youth program facilitator
  • Community educator
