Overview
The University of Wisconsin-Superior was founded as a teacher education college in 1893, and we remain committed to that strong heritage of innovation and quality in our education programs today. Teaching is one of the world’s most impactful professions, and it can also be one of the most challenging and rapidly changing. Our faculty keep pace with these changes, teaching the latest instructional methods and best practices.
The quality, experience, support and flexibility of the elementary education major at UW-Superior is what makes this program stand out. As an elementary education student, you will work with children in local classrooms early in your program and throughout your time at UW-Superior. Our instructors not only teach the latest in instructional methods but also provide techniques to support social-emotional development in diverse and inclusive classrooms.
This program is available on campus and online.
What You’ll Learn
As an elementary education student at UW-Superior, you will begin working with children in local classrooms early in your program and throughout your coursework. Early and frequent exposure to a variety of hands-on educational experiences and classroom settings sets this program apart from many others. These practical classroom experiences are accompanied by thorough coursework that teaches best practices for instruction, classroom management, and supporting the social and emotional development of children.
The elementary education major prepares you to teach grades K-9 and requires an instruction minor. Additional licensure options are available in early childhood education, early childhood special education, and K-12 special education.
Licensure
The University of Wisconsin-Superior no longer requires the Praxis assessment for degree licensure. As you are preparing to become a licensed educator in Wisconsin, you will partner with your advisor to select the content area assessment that you prefer. Choose from two options:
- Content area GPA – based on specific courses embedded in the curriculum and designated course assessments
- Passing score on an appropriate content area DPI-approved exam
This program meets Wisconsin state educator licensure requirements and satisfies many other states’ and countries’ requirements, as well. View a complete list and more information here.
Licensure for Degree Holders
If you currently hold a degree and are interested in teaching, UW-Superior offers licensure programs that apply your prior coursework.

Program Outcomes/Career Opportunities
There is a well-documented nationwide shortage of teachers, and UWS elementary education teachers are in high demand. The vast majority of our graduates find teaching jobs upon graduation, and many have multiple opportunities to choose from.
