Overview

Mediation skills are essential for resolving conflicts in both professional and personal settings—not just in the legal field. Workplace conflicts are common, and supervisors often spend significant time managing them. The Mediation Certificate at UW-Superior equips you with the tools to effectively resolve disputes, a skill highly valued by employers.

Upon completing both courses in this certificate, participants are eligible to be listed on Minnesota’s approved mediator lists.

What You’ll Learn

Through the Mediation Certificate, students will:

  • Understand ethics and ethical considerations in mediation.
  • Gain knowledge of domestic abuse issues, including definitions of battery, power imbalances, domestic abuse screening, simulations, role-plays, and related legal issues.
  • Learn conflict resolution and mediation theory, including the mediation process, mediator conduct, and rules and practices governing mediation.
  • Explore psychological aspects of separation, divorce, and family dynamics, including the needs of children, family law, and family economics.
  • Apply mediation skills through experiential learning, simulations, and role-playing exercises.

Certificate Requirements

To earn the Mediation Certificate, students must successfully complete both courses listed below. Credit-seeking students must achieve a minimum GPA of 2.0 in each course.
