Learning Aboard Sadie Ann
A Coast Guard-certified passenger vessel fitted with the tools of a research vessel, Sadie Ann is an ideal floating classroom.
Teachers can use Sadie Ann to support curriculum or activities of their own design, or they can register their classes for the programs below offered by the Lake Superior Research Institute and aligned with common educational standards.
What’s in the Water?
Discover the science, species and stories beneath the surface through hands-on exploration and guided discovery.

Appropriate for learners of all ages, participants in this program discover for themselves what is to be found in the waters of Lake Superior and its watershed.
Depending on group size, the program includes three to six exploratory activities that focus on sampling and analyzing water for chemicals, benthic organisms, plankton, aquatic plants and insects, fish, marine debris, or other cultural artifacts.
Activities are guided by a trained and passionate crew who support participants in their explorations and help to create a safe environment for learning.
Participants have an opportunity to engage directly in sampling and analysis activities. At the end of the program, students share what they’ve discovered and learned in a guided, closing discussion.
Freshwater Scientists for a Day
Real tools, real data, real science – students step into the role of freshwater researchers on Lake Superior.

Designed for middle or high school students, this program focuses on the methodologies of science and the multi-disciplinary collaborations required to pursue science-based inquiries.
Students use the tools of aquatic biologists and limnologists to explore questions about the ecosystem of Lake Superior. In supplemental activities, students plot sampling locations using latitude and longitude, document their experiences in field notebooks and database entries and explore water-related educational tracks and careers with university students and professional scientists.
Data gathered by the students is added to datasets available to teachers for pre- or post-trip activities and lessons.
