UW-Superior earns 2026 Carnegie Foundation Community Engagement Classification

For the second consecutive time, the University of Wisconsin-Superior has been selected for the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement, a prestigious national recognition awarded by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in partnership with the American Council on Education (ACE).

“I am thrilled to share that UW-Superior has earned this distinguished designation once again,” said UW-Superior Chancellor Renée Wachter. “This recognition affirms what we’ve long known about UWS. From our Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program and four dynamic research centers to our new Sadie Ann Education and Research Vessel, UW-Superior’s Anchor of the North campus is a hub for community engagement and real-world learning. Our students, faculty and staff collaborate to explore, problem-solve and apply their work in ways that directly benefit our region.”

Institutions receiving the Community Engagement designation are evaluated on their demonstrated alignment between mission, culture, leadership, resources and practices that support meaningful, reciprocal partnerships with their communities. UW-Superior was recognized for its strong, campus-wide commitment to integrating engagement into teaching, research and service.

The 2026 Carnegie Classifications include the newly established Research Colleges and Universities (RCU) category, which joins the long-standing Research 1 (R1) and Research 2 (R2) classifications. UW-Superior also recently earned this designation.

“This milestone is a direct reflection of UW-Superior’s passion, dedication and commitment to academic excellence and impactful research,” said Wachter

UW-Superior joins UW colleagues, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Green Bay, UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Parkside and UW-Whitewater and more than 500 U.S. colleges and universities to have received the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, an elective designation that indicates institutional commitment to community engagement by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
