The University of Wisconsin-Superior invites the community to join in celebrating Red Cross Day with multiple events on Thursday, November 13, in the Yellowjacket Union. Volunteers from the local Red Cross chapter will join UW-Superior staff from various departments throughout the day.
Holidays for Heroes Card Writing and the opportunity to learn about becoming a Red Cross volunteer will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Shippar Atrium. The Red Cross collects more than 10,000 messages of thanks and holiday greetings that are distributed to local military units and veterans. During Red Cross Day, people are invited to write notes of appreciation for these local heroes.
Hands-only CPR will be demonstrated and taught from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Shippar Atrium. Red Cross staff and volunteers will train individuals in delivering hands-only CPR and using an AED. Hands-only CPR, which is performed without rescue breaths, is simple to learn and easy to remember. When performed immediately, CPR can double or triple the chance of survival from cardiac arrest. This valuable skill takes less than 15 minutes to learn.
Additionally, UW-Superior students will teach fellow students, faculty and staff and community members about refugees, international humanitarian law and the Red Cross through an exhibit titled “Refugee for 90 Minutes,” which will take place from 10 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. in the Yellowjacket Union Great Room. Participation times are 10 to 11:30 a.m.; 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; 1 to 2:30 p.m.; 2:30 to 4 p.m. and 4 to 5:15 p.m. The exhibit provides an interactive model to help participants understand both the technical aspects of the topic – such as the legal definition of a refugee and rights under international humanitarian law – and non-technical issues, such as living conditions, food and safety in refugee camps. “Refugee for 90 Minutes” aims to educate the community and university about the factors that cause people to become refugees and to foster a deeper understanding of their hopes and fears as they embark on their journeys.
Red Cross Day is hosted by The Link Center’s Academic Service-Learning, Veterans and Nontraditional Student Center and Political Science Program.
