The UW-Superior Health Minor increases your knowledge of contemporary health issues and teaches you how to take actions that promote or restore health. This program will prepare you to teach health classes in a school setting or to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) licensing exam.

Course topics include:

  • Responding to emergencies
  • Human structure and function
  • Principles of nutrition
  • Human sexuality

  • Pathophysiology of disease
  • Community and environmental health

K-12 Health Education

This minor is approved by Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction for students in any major who also complete the Instruction Minor and a full semester of student teaching. You will have opportunities in K-12 classrooms throughout your coursework.

This minor can be paired with the Physical Education Major, which includes required teacher certification coursework and student teaching.

While our programs are designed to align with Wisconsin state licensure requirements, many students apply for licenses in other states, such as Michigan and Minnesota. We encourage you to check with your state’s Department of Education to determine if there are additional requirements.

Unlike some universities, UW-Superior education programs do not have an enrollment cap, meaning there is no limit on the number of qualified students we accept.

Certified Health Education Specialist

Students who complete the health minor are qualified to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) licensing exam. This nationally recognized credential assures employers that individuals meet the highest standards for the profession. Health education specialists work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, schools and universities, government offices, businesses, non-profits and more. Health education specialists work with individuals, families, and communities, as well as public and private organizations to create, implement, oversee and analyze programs and strategies that promote health and well-being.

Licensure for Degree Holders
