UW-Superior students studying in Swenson Hall

The University of Wisconsin-Superior was founded as a teacher education college in 1893. That strong heritage of innovation and quality has guided our education programs for more than a century. Today, UW-Superior is still known for excellence in PK-12 education programs. Our graduates are leaders in their field, making a lasting difference in students’ lives. The need for dedicated and highly skilled educators has never been greater and with a degree from UW-Superior, opportunities abound.

UW-Superior’s history/social studies education program offers a distinctive global focus and emphasizes research, writing, oral communication and critical analysis to foster lifelong learning. A history major with a social studies teaching concentration prepares students to apply these skills in the classroom when they teach history and social studies courses at the middle school and high school level. Our goal is to prepare passionate teachers who will inspire their future students. The program leads to grades 4-12 Social Sciences licensure in the State of Wisconsin and requires completion of the instruction minor.

How to Apply

No Enrollment Cap

Unlike many universities, our education programs do not have an enrollment cap, meaning there is no enrollment limit for students who meet admissions guidelines.

What You’ll Learn

Students in the program will be trained as social scientists who are knowledgable about the concepts, facts, tools, forms of disciplinary inquiry, and disciplinary forms of representation in civics, economic, geography, history, and the social/behavioral sciences. Students follow a course of study approved by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, including an array of courses focused on history, political science, and social science research. Additional coursework is completed through the teacher education program.

The following outcomes will be achieved in this major:

  • Engage in ethical reasoning to deliberate social, political, and economic issues
  • Apply your content knowledge to plan social studies learning sequences for grades 4-12
  • Gain the intellectual skills and habits of mind to think critically and communicate effectively
  • Grow in global awareness and intellectual flexability
  • Learn how to clearly express your thoughts through writing
  • Know how to construct abstract ideas from concrete sources and information
  • Be prepared to conduct historical research

The Social Inquiry Department helped me find a voice I didn’t know I had prior to becoming a student at UWS. The professors and their coursework have taught me how to make sound cases, in both written and verbal formats. The faculty in this department have helped me to feel prepared to become a teacher of social studies at the secondary level.
