The University of Wisconsin-Superior Music Department will host talented high school singers from throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota for its Chorfest High School Honor Choir Festival on Tuesday, October 28.

“Chorfest is unique among high school honor festivals because it allows students to perform choral works with an orchestra consisting of some of the best musicians in the Twin Ports,” said Michael Fuchs, UW-Superior director of choral activities and Music Department chair. “This is an opportunity that is not available in many high schools and smaller communities, and we are thrilled to provide an avenue through which students from the region can experience this wonderful music.”

Featuring a day of rehearsals, tours and masterclasses, conductors and clinicians include Fuchs, and UW-Superior Music Department colleagues Vicki Fingalson and Jeffrey Madison.

This event, which gets underway at 9 a.m., will include area high school students coming together to perform I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes by Adolphus Hailstork.

“This is a work of beauty, strength and hope,” said Fuchs. “Hailstork, one of America’s most distinguished composers, is celebrated worldwide for his ability to weave together the traditions of classical, spiritual and contemporary music into something deeply moving and profoundly human. His works have been performed by major symphonies and professional choirs throughout the world.”

Chorfest concludes with a public concert featuring high school vocalists along with UW-Superior singers at 7 p.m. in Thorpe Langley Auditorium.

Under the direction of Fuchs, students will share the stage with the UWS Choral Ensembles in a performance of Mendelssohn’s masterpiece, There Shall a Star From Jacob Come Forth. Chorfest will also feature performances by the UWS Singers and Chorale.

Tickets for the performance are $5 for adults and free for students. Thorpe Langley Auditorium is in Old Main, 1710 Weeks Ave.
