About
Amy has been teaching for more than two decades in K-12 and at the college level. Her teaching career began in the Twin Cities as a kindergarten teacher. Amy then taught first grade at the National Training Center in California for over a decade. While teaching in California, she served on many different committees including curriculum alignment, reading adoption, grade level chair, negotiations, district interview and executive union board. Being one of five sisters, she decided to return to the Northland as family is very important to her. She became the Field Experience Coordinator at UWS, but soon realized she missed the classroom. Amy returned to the classroom as a Special Education teacher with a focus on Emotional Behavior Disorder and Learning Disabilities at a Level IV School. It was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences as an educator.
Outside of school, Amy enjoys spending time with her family, reading, decorating and organizing a new home, lake activities, shopping, watching football and attending college hockey games.
Research Interests
Amy’s interests are in the area of K-6 reading and specifically how teachers meet the needs of struggling readers in the classroom. In addition, she prepares students for the Foundations of Reading Test (FORT) and works with the UW-FORT team on researching strategies to prepare for the assessment.
