Sociology

Sociology is the study of humans as social beings. Sociologists explore the role of society in shaping our thoughts, feelings, behavior and how we choose to respond to that influence. As a sociology minor at UW-Superior, you will explore this and analyze other contemporary social issues relevant to local and global communities as you take courses such as:

The Superior-Duluth area offers numerous internship opportunities including the Arrowhead Regional Development Commission, Superior City Planner’s office, Superior City Attorney’s Office, Superior Mayor’s office and Social Services, and more.

UW-Superior’s flexible study abroad programs offer opportunities to study, conduct research, and hold internships in other countries.

Teaching Licensure

Students who wish to teach sociology at the middle or high school level can earn their teaching license through our highly regarded Teacher Education program.

What You’ll Learn

Through a minor in sociology at UW-Superior, you will be able to:

• Analyze the production and reproduction of social meanings, norms and labels.
• Demonstrate understanding of social constructionism and be better able to analyze and interpret the ways that societies are often socially constructed.
• Cultivate understanding of how characteristics and identities, including race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexuality and disability affect how individuals experience their social world.
• Effectively analyze the role that social power and access to social resources play in determining social norms and labels.
• Analyze institutions, including government, education, law, and healthcare from a sociological perspective.
• Explain the grounding of social phenomena in history, geography and time.
• Research social phenomena using theory, existing research and appropriate research methods.
• Effectively communicate sociological understanding in written and oral presentations.
